What bottles of the wines in the ledger fetched at auction, lot by lot, from the results the houses publish themselves. Each row is one lot: the sale, the format and the price as the house published it. Nothing is converted, averaged or turned into an index.

How a wine auction works

A collector sends bottles to an auction house. Bidders compete, the hammer falls, and the winner pays the hammer price plus the house’s fee, usually 15 to 25 percent.

These are real sales, so they show what someone actually paid for a famous bottle.
