Vineyards in California sparkling (Carneros, Anderson Valley)

California sparkling (Carneros, Anderson Valley) in a minute

The grapes
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
What it tastes like
Ripe apple, citrus and toast, usually a little fruitier than Champagne.
The grapes grown here

Good to know

Cool, foggy areas such as Carneros and Anderson Valley keep the grapes fresh enough for sparkling wine. Several of the wineries were founded by Champagne houses.

On the label

Look for traditional method or méthode traditionnelle. It means the bubbles formed in the bottle.

What the land costs

The dearest vineyards here are in Carneros: $100,000–$250,000 an acre (2025). Zone by zone

Morning fog over the vines. Cool air from the Pacific keeps the grapes fresh and sharp, which is what sparkling wine needs.
The business side

Roederer Estate, Domaine Chandon, Mumm Napa, Domaine Carneros (Taittinger) and Schramsberg make Champagne-method wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in Carneros and the Anderson Valley on land and grapes that cost a fraction of Champagne's. The Crush Report publishes the grape prices; Champagne's Comité publishes its own; the gap is the economics.

Economics in brief

Sparkling-wine grapes in Carneros and Mendocino are picked early at lower sugar and have averaged in the low-to-mid thousands of dollars per ton in the Crush Report, against Champagne's roughly €6–7 per kilo (over €6,000 per tonne). Land in Carneros has been reported well under Napa's Cabernet benchland and far under Champagne's €1.1 million per hectare. Aging on lees is comparable; the cost difference is in land and grapes.
