France produces roughly 40–48 million hectolitres of wine a year (Ministry of Agriculture / Agreste, varying with the harvest) and is the largest wine exporter by value. For the collectible market it is the centre of gravity: the classified growths of Bordeaux, the grands crus of Burgundy, prestige Champagne and the top of the northern and southern Rhône.
L'essentiel
Why France dominates the collectible market
Four things converge: appellation law that fixes the supply of named sites, a two-century-old export trade that built distribution and reputation, the 1855 classification and the Burgundian cru hierarchy that give buyers a ready-made ranking, and a secondary market — Bordeaux négociants, Burgundy allocations, the London trade — that has existed long enough to produce a price history.
Economic facts that matter
Vineyard land values are published annually by SAFER, the state land agency, by appellation, which is why French regions have the most transparent land-price record of any wine country. Yields are capped by appellation rules (INAO), so supply for a named wine is bounded by the site and the weather, not by demand.
