The United States is the largest wine-consuming country and the largest import market, which is why US tariffs matter to every exporting region. California makes about 80% of US wine; Napa Valley, with under 4% of California's vineyard acreage, produces the wines that trade at auction.

The essentials

Why US economics are unusually transparent

The California Grape Crush Report (CDFA / USDA NASS) publishes tonnes and weighted average prices per tonne by district and variety every year, so Napa Cabernet grape prices are public in a way that no French appellation's are. Federal trade statistics publish wine imports by origin monthly, and the Harmonized Tariff Schedule is public — the raw material of this site's tariff tracker.
