Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families. It farms about 28 hectares of grand cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Échezeaux and the Côte de Beaune: the monopoles Romanée-Conti (1.81 ha) and La Tâche (6.06 ha), plus Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Échezeaux, Échezeaux, Corton (leased from 2009) and Montrachet. The domaine publishes bottle counts per wine per vintage in its release documents; Romanée-Conti runs at about 5,000–6,000 bottles.

Das Wesentliche

Economic profile

DRC is the purest scarcity economy in wine. Total production across all its wines is in the low tens of thousands of bottles — less than a single Bordeaux first growth's grand vin — and allocation prices are set far below secondary-market prices, so the secondary market, not the domaine, sets the price of a bottle. Its vineyards, inherited and never bought at market, carry an imputed land value that would make the domaine unviable if it had to service it: on SAFER's grand cru averages the 28 hectares would be worth well over €150 million, against wine sales at release prices a small fraction of that per year.

Vertiefung

Market history

DRC led the Burgundy boom from 2010 and the correction from 2022. Auction prices for Romanée-Conti reached the tens of thousands of dollars a bottle; a 1945 sold for $558,000 at Sotheby's in 2018, a record for a standard bottle at the time. The 2023–2025 fall in Burgundy prices hit DRC's younger vintages hardest, a reminder that thin markets fall as fast as they rise.
