Giacomo Conterno, run by Roberto Conterno in Monforte d'Alba, owns the 14-hectare Cascina Francia vineyard (bought 1974), Cerretta (2008) and Arione (2015). Monfortino, its riserva, is made only in vintages the family selects and aged about seven years in Slavonian oak.

Economic profile

Monfortino is Piedmont's scarcity-and-time product: perhaps 6,000–8,000 bottles in a declared year, released after the better part of a decade. The working capital of a seven-year aging regime, on top of Barolo's 38-month minimum, is the defining cost. Conterno also bought the Nervi estate in Gattinara (2018).
