Krug

The prestige-only house of Reims, LVMH-owned since 1999, whose Grande Cuvée is a blend of more than 120 wines and whose single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil comes from 1.84 hectares.

Krug makes only prestige Champagne: Grande Cuvée (a multi-vintage blend), Rosé, Vintage, Clos du Mesnil (1.84 ha, blanc de blancs) and Clos d'Ambonnay (0.68 ha, blanc de noirs). It buys most of its grapes from long-term growers and ferments in small oak casks. Production is not published; trade estimates put the house well under a million bottles.

Economic profile

Krug's economics are working capital: Grande Cuvée is aged around six years before release and the reserve wines that go into it span more than a decade, so the house carries many years of stock. Grape purchases at grand cru reference prices (€7–8.50 a kilo) make raw material a larger share of cost than at a Bordeaux estate; land is a smaller one. The two clos are the scarcity products, made in about 10,000–15,000 bottles in released vintages.
