Louis Roederer reports about 240 hectares of vineyard, supplying most of its needs — unusual for a major house — and has converted much of it to biodynamics. Cristal, created for Tsar Alexander II in 1876, is its prestige cuvée; Cristal Rosé is scarcer still.

The essentials
Economic profile
Roederer's ownership of its vineyards changes its cost structure: where Krug buys grand cru grapes at €7–8.50 a kilo, Roederer's Cristal fruit carries an imputed land cost instead, on land SAFER values at over a million euros a hectare. The house has released Cristal in most recent vintages, so it is one of the more liquid prestige cuvées.
