How fine-wine investing works

What people mean by 'investing in wine', how the market is structured, what it costs to participate, and the risks the marketing leaves out. Educational only.

Wooden wine cases and a rack of bottles in a small stone cellar

Diterbitkan 3 September 2026 · Ditinjau September 2026 · Corkonomics editorial ·

Fine-wine 'investment' means buying bottles or cases of a small number of collectible wines and holding them in bonded storage in the expectation of selling later at a higher price. The market is real, old and illiquid; the returns quoted are usually gross; the costs, risks and frictions are large and specific. This page describes them. It does not recommend anything.

What is traded

Perhaps a few hundred wines matter: the Bordeaux classified growths, the leading Burgundy domaines, prestige Champagne, a handful of Italian, Rhône and Napa estates. They share the features that make a collectible tradeable — recognisable, produced in consistent quantity each year, long-lived, sold in standard cases, and with a price history. Almost all trading is in original wooden cases held in bonded warehouses that never see the wine.

Where it is traded

Merchants (buying and selling from their own stock), auction houses (a buyer's premium of 15–25% on top of the hammer, and a seller's commission), and trade exchanges. Prices are quoted per case; the 'market price' of a wine is a merchant's or exchange's estimate from recent transactions and listings, not a quoted exchange price like a share's.

What it costs

Buying: retail margin or auction premium. Holding: bonded storage (a per-case annual fee), insurance, and the opportunity cost of capital. Selling: commission of 10% or more to a merchant or auction house, plus the bid-ask spread. A wine must appreciate by roughly a fifth to a third before its owner breaks even, and every year of holding costs 1–3% of value. The benchmarks page on this site shows an illustrative net-of-costs figure against the gross index.

The risks nobody quotes

Illiquidity — a case can take months to sell, and in a falling market the bid disappears. Provenance — the same wine with unbroken bonded storage history is worth more than one that has travelled; a bottle without provenance may be unsaleable. Authenticity — counterfeits of the most valuable wines are a documented problem, and buying at auction does not guarantee genuineness. Condition — fill level, label, capsule. Breakage and spoilage. Concentration — a 'wine portfolio' is a dozen names in three regions. Regulation — wine is not a security; the protections that apply to funds do not apply to a merchant holding your cases. Tax — capital gains treatment differs by country and is not as generous as often claimed.

The record

Trade indices show fine wine rising strongly from the early 2000s to 2011, falling for four years, rising to 2022, and falling since. Individual regions differ: Bordeaux peaked in 2011, Burgundy in 2022, Champagne rose with low volatility through the 2010s. None of this predicts anything. Corkonomics presents historical market data, labelled by basis, so that anyone considering the market can see what it has done — and reads the disclaimers on every page.
