The most expensive white wines in the world: Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese from about 8 hectares of the Saar's great slate hill, in a few hundred bottles when the year allows.

Weingut Egon Müller – Scharzhof farms about 16 hectares in the Saar, of which some 8 are in the Scharzhofberg. Its Trockenbeerenauslese, made only in years with botrytis, has repeatedly set records for white wine at auction; its Auslese and Kabinett are the volume.

One square for each year. The darker the square, the better the weather was for the grapes. Tap a year to read about it.

Economic profile

Egon Müller is the labour-cost extreme — steep slate worked by hand — and the yield extreme: a TBA is a few hundred half-bottles from grapes picked berry by berry. The estate's annual auction at the Trier Grosser Ring sets the reference prices.
