Gaja, run by Angelo Gaja and his children, reports about 100 hectares in Barbaresco and Barolo plus estates in Bolgheri (Ca' Marcanda) and Montalcino (Pieve Santa Restituta). Its three Barbaresco crus were the first Piedmont wines to reach first-growth prices.

L'essentiel
Economic profile
Gaja's single-vineyard wines are made in a few thousand bottles each and priced at the top of Italy. The house's decision in 1996 to declassify its crus from Barbaresco DOCG to Langhe Nebbiolo (reversed for the 2013 vintage) showed that brand, not appellation, carried the price.
