Opus One

Opus One was founded in 1979 by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild; it is now owned jointly by Constellation Brands (which bought Mondavi in 2004) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA. The estate reports about 170 acres of vineyard in Oakville, including parcels of To Kalon, and produces about 25,000 cases — by far the largest volume of any collectible Napa wine — sold partly through the Place de Bordeaux.

Opus One is Napa's liquidity leader: Bordeaux-scale production, global distribution through négociants since 2004, and continuous trading in every vintage. Its prices are far below the cult estates' — the volume is fifty times Screaming Eagle's — which makes it the natural Napa constituent for any index that requires liquidity.
