Ribera del Duero in a minute
- The grapes
- Tempranillo, called Tinto Fino here
- What it tastes like
- Black fruit, liquorice and oak; fuller and firmer than Rioja.
Good to know
The vineyards sit at 750–1,000 metres, with hot days and freezing nights. Spain’s most expensive wines, Vega Sicilia and Pingus, come from here.
On the label
Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva mark the ageing, as in Rioja.
What the land costs
The dearest vineyards here are in Castilla y León average: ≈$27,665 a hectare (2024). Zone by zone
The business side
Ribera del Duero sits at 750–1,000 metres along the upper Duero, with hot days, freezing nights and a short season that gives dark, powerful Tempranillo (called Tinto Fino here). It was almost unknown outside Spain until the 1980s; today it holds the country’s most expensive wines, yet Castilla y León’s irrigated vineyard averages about €25,000 a hectare in the Ministry’s survey, with the famous estates’ land worth many times that.
Economics in brief
Spain’s agriculture ministry puts the 2024 average for irrigated vineyard in Castilla y León at €24,716 a hectare and the national average at €16,327; La Rioja is the dearest region at about €40,000–45,000. Those averages hide the premium for old bush vines on the best Ribera sites, which trade privately and rarely. Costs are moderate and yields low by law (a maximum of 7,000 kg a hectare), and the top estates sell at Bordeaux first-growth prices, so the gap between land cost and bottle price is one of the widest in Europe.
