The dearest vineyard land in the world

More than a million euros a hectare.

  1. Côte de Nuits grand cruBurgundy

The top rank of Burgundy, divided among many owners and almost never sold. The most expensive vineyard land in the world.

Deep gravel banks beside the Gironde, three of the five first growths, and almost no land ever comes up for sale.

A tiny plateau of clay and gravel suited to Merlot, about 800 hectares in all, with some of the most expensive wines in the world.

  4. Côte d’Or premier cruBurgundy

The second rank, on the middle of the same slopes.

A wide appellation: the plateau and slopes around the town fetch the top prices, the flat land towards the river far less.

The named slopes such as Cannubi: south-facing, rich in limestone marl, and the Barolos collectors want most.

The chalk slope south of Épernay where the best Chardonnay for Champagne grows; the grand cru villages fetch the top of the range.

The gravel of the southern Médoc with a first growth of its own; prices sit just below Pauillac.

A single granite hill of about 135 hectares. There is no official price because plots almost never change hands.

  12. Champagne AOC averageChampagne

The appellation as a whole: small, strictly limited and fully planted, so even an ordinary plot is dear.

The appellation as a whole across its eleven villages.

Cool, foggy land at the top of San Francisco Bay, prized for sparkling wine and Pinot Noir rather than Cabernet.

Alpine terraces in the sunniest part of Switzerland, farmed by hand, with a home market that pays Swiss prices for Swiss wine. No official figure exists; this is the latest published one.

  2. Chianti ClassicoTuscany

Spain's classic region has plenty of land, so prices stay modest even for good vineyards.

  7. Kent and SussexEngland

Chalk downs like Champagne’s, a warming climate, and Champagne houses planting there. Very little suitable land ever reaches the open market.

  8. Moulin-à-VentBeaujolais

  14. StellenboschStellenbosch

The Cape’s oldest district, between granite mountains; the land is worth more for houses than for vines, which is why the vineyard area keeps shrinking.

  15. Côtes de ProvenceProvence

The source of the world’s pale rosé. The vines are modestly priced; the estates and their brands are not.

The everyday appellation across the whole region. There is more wine than buyers, so land here has been falling in price for years.
