Château Cheval Blanc reports about 39 hectares of vines on gravel and clay at the border of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, planted roughly half to Cabernet Franc and half to Merlot. It was Premier Grand Cru Classé A until it withdrew from the 2022 classification. Owned since 1998 by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and the late Albert Frère's family.

The essentials
Economic profile
Cheval Blanc's 2022 withdrawal from the Saint-Émilion classification — with Ausone and Angélus — was a statement that market standing no longer needed the appellation's endorsement. The grand vin is reported at around 6,000 cases; Le Petit Cheval is the second wine. The estate's Norman Foster-designed winery (2011) is a visible example of the capital that LVMH ownership brings.
