Château Lafite Rothschild

The Rothschild first growth of Pauillac: about 112 hectares of vines, roughly 16,000–20,000 cases of grand vin, and for two decades the most traded wine in the world.

Château Lafite Rothschild is a first growth of the 1855 classification, owned by the Rothschild family (Domaines Barons de Rothschild) since 1868. The estate reports about 112 hectares of vineyard in Pauillac, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. The grand vin is produced in the tens of thousands of cases; the second wine, Carruades de Lafite, in similar quantity. Lafite's prices led the Chinese-demand boom of 2008–2011 and the subsequent fall, making it the clearest case study in the modern fine-wine record.

The essentials

Economic profile

Lafite is large for a first growth — the vineyard is among the biggest in the Médoc's top tier — which is why its grand vin trades in volume at auction and on the Place de Bordeaux. Production is not published precisely; trade reporting has long put the grand vin between roughly 15,000 and 20,000 cases depending on selection and vintage. The estate farms its own fruit, ages in 100% new oak from its own cooperage, and sells en primeur through the Place.

Deep dive

Market history

Between 2005 and 2011 Lafite's secondary-market price rose faster than any other first growth's on Asian demand; the 2008 vintage, with a Chinese character on the bottle, and the 2009 and 2010 releases marked the peak. Prices of those vintages fell by roughly half over the following four years in trade reporting — the largest drawdown in the modern Bordeaux record — before recovering slowly. Lafite has since released at prices closer to the trading level of older vintages.
