Château d'Yquem (Sauternes, not Pauillac — it sits in the 1855 classification's separate Sauternes list) reports about 113 hectares of vines and a yield of roughly 9 hl/ha, a fraction of a red first growth's. LVMH has controlled it since 1999. Yquem declared no wine in 1992, 2012 and other years — supply that simply does not exist.

Economic profile

Yquem's economics are the extreme case of yield: botrytised Sémillon picked in several passes produces about a tenth of a Médoc estate's bottles per hectare, and in bad years nothing. Production has been reported around 65,000–100,000 bottles depending on the vintage. Its secondary-market prices have been steadier and lower-returning than the red first growths' — sweet wine demand is narrower — which makes it a useful comparison for volatility.
