Château Latour

The first growth that left en primeur: since the 2011 vintage Latour has released only when it judges the wine ready, holding stock and capturing the aging premium itself.

Château Latour is a Pauillac first growth owned since 1993 by François Pinault's Artémis Domaines. The estate reports about 92 hectares of vines, of which the 47-hectare Enclos around the château supplies the grand vin. In 2012 Latour withdrew from the en primeur system and now releases each vintage — and re-releases older ones — from its own cellars when it considers them ready, a decision that shifted the aging economics from merchant to château.

Economic profile

Latour's withdrawal from en primeur is the most significant structural decision by a first growth in a generation. By holding stock for a decade the estate captures the appreciation that previously accrued to merchants and collectors, at the cost of carrying that inventory on its own balance sheet — which a family-owned luxury group can do. Production of the grand vin has been reported by the trade at around 15,000–18,000 cases; Les Forts de Latour is the second wine.
