Masseto is a single-vineyard Merlot from a 7-hectare clay hillside next to Ornellaia, made as a separate estate by Frescobaldi since 2018 with its own winery. Production is about 30,000 bottles; Massetino is the second wine (from 2017).

Economic profile

Masseto's price — the highest of any Italian wine at release — comes from Pétrus-scale scarcity applied to a Bordeaux-variety wine with Sassicaia's distribution. Its land, a single clay hill, cannot be expanded; the estate's 2018 separation from Ornellaia and the new gravity winery were investments in the brand's independence.
