Petrus

Eleven and a half hectares of Merlot on Pomerol's clay button, about 30,000 bottles a year, and the most expensive red wine of Bordeaux.

Petrus (the estate spells it without the accent) is owned by the Moueix family. It reports 11.4 hectares planted almost entirely to Merlot on the blue clay of the Pomerol plateau, and production of about 30,000 bottles in a normal year. There is no second wine and no classification: Petrus's standing is entirely market-made.

Economic profile

Petrus is the scarcity case of Bordeaux: a first-growth-level price from a tenth of a first growth's volume. Its land, on SAFER's Pomerol averages, is among the most valuable in the region, but the estate's parcel would not trade at any appellation average. A 20% stake was sold in 2018 to the Colombian-American investor Alejandro Santo Domingo, reportedly valuing the estate in the hundreds of millions of euros — one of the few public data points for a top Bordeaux estate's value.
