Château Mouton Rothschild

Promoted to first growth in 1973 — the only change ever made to the 1855 classification — and the largest producer of grand vin among the five.

Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, reports about 90 hectares of vines in Pauillac. It was elevated from second to first growth in 1973 after decades of campaigning by Baron Philippe. The artist labels, a different painter each year since 1945, give its vintages a collectible identity independent of the wine.

Economic profile

Mouton's grand vin is produced in larger quantities than the other first growths — trade reporting has put it at 20,000–25,000 cases — and the estate also owns Clerc Milon and d'Armailhac and the Mouton Cadet brand, which gives the group a volume business alongside the first growth. The 2000 vintage, in its gilt-ram bottle, and the 1982 are the reference collectibles.
